TurnServer has started in the Louis Pasteur University (now called Strasbourg University) in Strasbourg, France, in the mid-July 2008.

It has been originally created by Sebastien Vincent. Beyond the protocol, TurnServer has been implemented with security in mind in order to minimize bugs and memory leaks during the development process.
